Bamboo, which is actually considered a grass instead of a tree, grows much more quickly than most types of hardwood. Usually the bamboo is harvested between three and six years. Compare that to hardwood trees which can take anywhere from 40 years to 120 years to mature. That’s a big difference obviously and is the main reason it is considered such a good Eco friendly option to hardwood.

Another reason bamboo is liked by environmentalists is because the bamboo requires very little pesticides and fertilizers. Pesticides and fertilizers can pollute the land and waters where the forests are managed. However, the manufacturing process of bamboo flooring can result in byproducts being dumped into local rivers and streams. So, it’s very important to make sure you are buying bamboo from a reputable manufacturer. Two of the top manufacturers are Teragren and Ecotimber.

Bathroom

One of the problems with bamboo flooring is that the product comes from countries where there isn’t much regulation. Again, this is why you want to look for well known and respected brands. Another thing to check for is whether the product passes the standards set by the Federal Stewardship Council, or FSC for short. The organization certifies forest management.

Look for bamboo that is older than just a year or two. The best bamboo will be harvested every five or six years or longer, which makes for a better product because it will be more durable, hard and dense.

A positive aspect of bamboo is the fact that it does better is areas that are exposed to water, whereas hardwood flooring does not do well when exposed to water. Also, the better quality bamboo is harder than many hardwoods, is stain and scratch resistant. Because bamboo is water and stain resistant, the floors are easier to maintain and clean. Using a wet mop on a bamboo floor is OK, while it is not with most hardwood floors.

One of the cons of bamboo is that there are basically only two types of colors: a natural light yellow hue and a darker caramelized tone called amber. However, it is possible to stain the natural planks with many different colors.

Make sure you have an experienced floor installer to handle your job if you choose to use bamboo as sometimes floating a bamboo floor can be difficult. Overall though, installing isn’t a problem and will make you happy to use a product which isn’t hurting the environment.

Bamboo Flooring Review – Pros and Cons of Bamboo Floor

“Organize” is a familiar word heard on many of today’s popular decorating shows. Every family has its struggles with some type of clutter whether it is stacks of papers or a cluttered and cramped bathroom. In fact, the National Association of Professional Organizers reports that 80% of what we keep we never use, we wear 20% of the clothes we own while the other 80% hangs there just in case, and 25% of adults say they pay bills late because they lost them.

If you have stacks of papers, frazzled mornings, or lost car keys, use the following ideas to help you organize your family and home.

Home Decor

Evenings/Mornings:

1. If you have rushed mornings, make lunches, set out clothes, and put everything you need for the next day in a designated area the night before. Have kids pack homework and books in their backpack so they will be ready for the next day.

2. Place your purse, briefcase and keys in a designated area every day so you always know where they are.

3. Decide the night before what is on the menu for breakfast the next morning. If the family is to have cereal, set out the cereal boxes, bowls, and spoons.

4. Make a “to do” list for the next day and organize it according to what task needs to be completed first.

5. Fill the gas tank the day before so you won’t have to worry about getting gas if you are running late the next morning.

Bathrooms:

6. To organize countertop clutter, purchase a plastic tub with a handle on top. Place all of your accessories such as hair spray and lotion, in the tub and place under the counter. Take the tub out when you are ready to use it and then put it back under the counter when you are finished with it.

7. To organize your shower, buy shower caddies to place your soaps and shampoos in. There are numerous styles available in many discount and fine department stores.

8. To help keep your shower doors clean, buy a water squeegee (like you use on your windows) and place it in the shower. When you are done taking a shower just wipe down the doors with the squeegee and you’ll have a clean and dry shower door. Many of the squeegees come with a whole in the handle, which is convenient for hanging it up in the shower with a suction cup.

9. Install a straight magnet in your medicine cabinet for tweezers, nail clippers, and scissors.

10. Store reading material in a decorative magazine rack. As you add new magazines, throw away the older ones to keep the magazine rack from overflowing.

11. Throw away items in your bathroom that are old or you don’t use anymore, such as make-up, lotions, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, old razors, sunscreen, and perfume.

12. If you are out of space in your bathroom cabinets for towels, roll them up and display them in a decorative basket next to the shower or bath tub.

13. Install hooks on the back of your bathroom door or wall space for towels and robes.

14. Use drawer organizers for makeup, jewelry, ponytail holders, and other loose items.

15. Place a shelving unit above the toilet for storing extra towels, washcloths, and other accessories.

16. Put a clock in each bathroom so everyone can be on time.

Closet:

17. Place baskets in your closet for laundry and dry cleaning.

18. Sort through your clothes and anything you don’t wear anymore, bag and donate to a local charity. This includes clothes that are no longer in fashion, no longer fit, or clothes you haven’t worn in a year. Also, get rid of those worn out and/or uncomfortable shoes you no longer wear.

19. Separate your clothes by season. If you have a tall closet with several rows of rods, place current seasons clothes on the lowest level and move out of season clothes on the tallest rods.

20. Categorize your clothes by purpose, such as work, casual, and formal.

21. Gather all unused wire hangers and take them to the dry cleaners to recycle.

22. Hang scarves on a hanger or scarf rack. Also, hang belts and ties on hangers or racks.

23. Use a shoe rack to keep shoes organized and throw out shoe boxes that clutter the floor.

24. Install hooks on the closet wall to hang up hats and purses.

25. Store clothes that you want to save in a vacuum sealed plastic bag. These bags pack down for storing under the bed or in a closet. Remember to save only the clothes that you think will be worn!

Kitchen:

26. Organize your cabinets into several categories such as plates, glasses, Tupperware, kid’s plates and sippy cups. Place the plates on one shelf, the glasses on another shelf, and so on. This way when you empty the dishwasher, you or other family members will always know where everything goes.

27. Group your foods together in the pantry for easy access and to help you identify when inventory is getting low. For example, group together your canned goods, cereals, pasta, etc.

28. Place all packets (gravy, Jell-O, sauces) in a basket and place on shelf.

29. Purchase a spice rack that works best for your cabinet. Alphabetize your spices and place frequently used spices on the front of the rack and all others towards the back of the rack.

30. For all of those plastic containers and Tupperware items, dedicate one cabinet or drawer for those items and try to purchase stackable containers to maximize your space.

31. Save your countertop space for items you use daily. Only display cookbooks that you really use and if possible store your canister set in your pantry instead of on the counter.

32. If you have a collection of clipped recipes that are filling drawers and countertop space, purchase a three-ring binder in a color that matches your decor, a box of plastic sheet protectors (to protect your recipes), paper, and a set of dividers with tabs. Glue each recipe onto a piece of paper (use front and back of each piece of paper) and then place into a sheet protector. Categorize recipes (breakfast, desert, etc.), label the tabs, and place recipes in binder. Additional tip, if you purchase a binder that has pockets, store clipped recipes that you want to try in the pockets before adding them to your collection.

33. Do you have mounds of plastic bags from the grocery store? Place about 10 bags inside of 1 bag and throw the rest away. You can always get more the next time you go to the grocery store.

34. Get in a habit of cleaning out your refrigerator every time you bring home groceries. Dispose of any food that is no longer edible or your family is not going to eat.

Kid’s Room:

35. In a boy’s room, put a basketball hoop over a laundry basket for slam-dunking dirty clothes.

36. Place a two-compartment hamper in your kid’s room so he or she can sort light clothes from dark clothes as they undress.

37. String a clothesline in your child’s room and have your child clothespin his or her favorite artwork.

38. Hang a fish net from the ceiling to store stuffed animals, dolls, or action figures.

39. Add a bookshelf and help your child organize their books.

40. Buy the kids their own alarm clocks and teach them how to get up on time.

Misc.

41. Make sure everything in your house has a home. Teach all family members to mind their own messes. For example, if you take it out, put it back; if you open it, close it; if you throw it down, pick it up; if you make a mess, clean it up; and so on.

42. Put wastebaskets in every room and place several unused trash bags in the bottom of each one. This will eliminate countless trips to retrieve new trash bags and give all family members a place to throw away their trash.

43. Place a decorative basket on the coffee table to keep remote controls in.

44. Use a plastic caddy (instead of shelf space) to store cleaning supplies in and tote it from room to room.

45. Keep baskets or tubs for toys in every room for fast pickup and play time.

46. For kids’ outdoor toys, purchase a weatherproof, bench-style storage box and store toys inside. Also, gather all outdoor balls and place into a large, mesh drawstring bag and store in garage.

47. Each night before bedtime, have all family members pick up clutter for 15 minutes. Make a game out of it and see who can pick up the most things in the shortest amount of time.

48. Create a family message center on the refrigerator or other prominent place and use it for shopping lists, reminders, calendars, and phone messages.

49. Make a master grocery list on your computer from a spreadsheet or Word document. Categorize the groceries into sections such as frozen, dairy, and so on. In each category, list the most frequent items that you buy. Organize the grocery list according to the way your favorite grocery store’s isles are set up. Print copies and keep one copy handy for the current week. When you see you are low on a product or you’re preparing your grocery list for the week, simply highlight whatever items you need. Keep the document current by adding new items and/or deleting items you no longer buy. Also, create a space on the document for Misc. items where your family members can write down what they need that is not on your list.

50. Create an in box on your desk for papers (bills, permission slips, etc.) that need your attention.

The goal of organizing isn’t to make your home pristine but rather to make your life more calm and functional. Work with the above ideas and you will end up having less clutter, a simplified home, more quality time for yourself and your family, and improved productivity.

One of the hardest things to do when planning your special day is to spend hours scouring the internet looking for a unique, classy, and un-used location for your wedding. I’ve spent the past two days in searching for that oh so elusive perfect spot. I’m going to save you all the trouble I went through and compile all the spots I found through obscure Google searches and message boards and put these locations in one place. Welcome to your one stop shop for unique wedding locations all over Maryland. For your convince I’ve put them into genre such as “Castle Theme”, “Relaxed Theme”, etc. so if you’re really in a knot, you don’t have to spend your whole day looking when you could be finding the perfect pair of shoes to go with your dress. Here we go:

Castles:

Chandeliers

Cloisters Castle: This private home that was commissioned and completed in a twenty seven year span screams with uniqueness. From the exterior built of Butler gold and gray stone, gables taken from a medieval house in France as well as medallions from a 16th century Venetian home, it’s a work of architectural brilliance. Located in Luthersville, MD this venue is surrounded by sixty acres of trees and a lovely garden. Its insides are furnished with authentic medieval pieces and antique furniture. The fireplace was even commissioned to be built from an antique chest carved with Renaissance figures. Famously, it was the site of actor Will Smith’s and Jada Pinkett’s wedding in 1998 but that hasn’t put a damper on the delightful and unforgettable atmosphere the house creates. Either the outside or the inside can be made available and there is only one event per day, allowing your day to be uninterrupted in its magic. The fee for rental allows for up to ten hours on the grounds and more time can negotiated through the contract via an extra hour’s fee. The venue comfortably fits 175 guests and as a bonus the staff acts as your wedding planner directing set-up, timing, and valet parking.

Maryvale Castle : Functioning as a preparatory school, Maryvale Castle boasts huge grounds complete with wedding chapel if the bride doesn’t envision herself walking down the castle’s much talked of grand winding staircase. Built in 1917 in Greenspring Valley, MD, this treasure houses an oak-paneled Great Hall, a solarium, and a bridal suite. A stone manor house sweeping off in both directions takes its influences from Warwick Castle in England with its Gothic arched windows, port cochere, and imposing gray towers. A rental agreement includes four hours of time which includes the rehearsal time and full use of the property. However, because it is still a working school, hours on the weekdays are more restricted than weekends. With an indoor guest capacity of 125 people and an outdoor capacity of 200, this venue is worth the strict appointment-only tour.

Mansions:

Montpelier Mansion: A mansion straight out of a Jane Austin piece, this brick Georgian structure sits on seventy acres of land flanked by dogwood trees. Built between 1781 and 1785 this national historic landmark is open to the public for tours and festivities and once housed George Washington and his wife Martha. It is also home to an uncommonly found 18th century summer house which is beautifully preserved. The maximum capacity inside and outside is somewhat small, eighty-five guests total, but the unique floor plan with crown molding and period furniture lends itself to an opulent and old-fashioned charm all its own. For people set on a Sunday wedding this venue isn’t for you as they don’t allow rentals on Sundays, however, having free reign over this delicate place is well worth the date change. Located in Laurell this mansion radiates country elegance akin to many a bride’s favorite novel, complete with circular stone driveway.

Glenveiw Mansion: Situated in Rockville, MD as part of a Rockville Civic Center Park the house is within the neoclassical tradition sporting pillars and an infinite number of beautiful black shuttered windows looking out over the lawn. The dining room is veiled in class and luxury as are its floor-to-ceiling dark paneled wooden walls and long oval windows. The conservatory shines with old-fashioned chandeliers whose light bounces off the Italian green marble floors. The rest of the house is touched with intricate details pertaining to the period in which it was first built housing a number of turn of the century, one- of- a- kind antiques sure to make any wedding memorable. Maximum capacity for this venue is 225 guests and amount charged allows for two hours of set-up and one hour of clean-up. Some strict drawbacks to possible brides are the impossibilities of seated dining, no cooking allowed on-site, and no red-dyed beverages of any kind.

Stronghold Mansion: On top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Dickerson, MD the completely white mansion with pillars and latticed widow’s peak lends itself to the country simplicity surrounding it. The straight lawns emphasize the well designed rock walls that glide around the property housing a variety of elegant but simple flora and fauna normally seen in a country garden. The shimmering, circular lake to the side of the house has large willow trees surrounding it and making a path towards the house itself where the architecture inside matches the outside in its refined gentile decor. A standard contract allows for 7 hours and includes set-up and clean-up times. . Additional hours can be negotiated. Maximum number of guests in attendance is 200 and the rental includes 40 by 57 inch tent over the patio and can be added on to encompass the lake area as well. Parking is limited as there are only 85 spots available and clearly marked by the owners , small shuttle buses are permitted.

Liriodendron Mansion: An 1898 ornate masterpiece encompassed by a landscape dripping with flowers, this antique summer home in Harford County leaves nothing unchecked in your imagination. Whether it’s the Grecian old-world architecture built around intricate carvings, urns of flowers and stone pillars, or the wisteria vines that form a canopy over the porch for a otherworldly rehearsal dinner, the house is awash in magic all its own. The Palladian styled mansion reminds guests of a fairyland surrounded by woods and fountains with a variety of romantic stone sculptures throughout the grounds. Maximum capacity is 150 guests outside, 100 guests inside with seating and there are plenty of guests parking. The renter has a choice of 6.5 hrs on weekdays where as on weekends they must choose between both rental times and party times in a wide selection of choices. Wedding rehearsals are extra payment as well as table and chair rental fees, but this is no different from most other venues.

Tudor Place: This home to Martha Washington’s late granddaughter, Martha Custic Peter, is bursting at the seams with rich history and warm, comfortable elegance. The house itself was built in 1805 by Dr. William Thorton who was also famous for building the first United States Capital and The Octagon building in Washington, DC. Inside the house there are over one hundred objects belonging to George and Martha Washington and it’s all been documented in an archived collection of letters, diaries, books, and photographs. As far as guests, the mansion can hold up to 35 guests for a wedding ceremony and for parties over 35 guests they must pay extra. This venue is for ceremonies only and the reservation includes an hour block of time for that ceremony. They also have their own on sight photography for a fee.

Ceresville Mansion: With a variety of ceremony options to suit any bride as well as an in-house consultant to coordinate everything smoothly, this Mansion comes with superior services. Whether the perfect wedding uses their white Grecian Pergola surrounded by dogwoods in bloom, or the terrace climbing with Ivy and backlit with candles shimmering over the reflecting lily pool, it will be something to remember. The white and black sweeping Cape Cod style home was built in 1888 alongside rivers, hillsides, and a ten acre meadow also open for events. Much of the original architecture as well as the antique furniture and fireplace are still the same as 1888. This venue has everything covered in the rental fee from seven hours of event coordination to all the outside details a catering company would normally provide like linens and a dance floor. Every Thursday evening they also offer an unusual wedding discount for those on a budget and cut the price nearly in half for the same services as a Friday or Saturday wedding event. The venue can provide for up to 200 guests and also gives a complimentary list of Food and Beverage minimum pricing so it is free of confusion and out of the way.

Inns and Taverns:

Slades Inn and Tavern: A Victorian dream painted in lively light blues and dark blues, this Inn sets itself apart with two matching circular turrets, high brick chimneys and a white wrap-around porch that Anne of Green Gables would envy. The laid-back romantic space is in Fredrick, MD a few minutes away from Baltimore. The land is dappled with greenery and horses while the exciting night-life and history of the city are in close proximity. Enjoy an easy day as all the guests are accommodated with places to stay after the reception and perhaps even stay past the ceremony for a honeymoon to enjoy hot air ballooning or a carriage tour. From beginning to end of that extraordinary day, Slade’s takes care of everything from “his and hers” massages, bridal party hair and makeup sessions, as well as brunches and teas. Indoor buffet seating is for 100 guests whereas larger parties can be accommodated with tents for seated dinners and dancing for up to 150. Once the party is over, guests too busy having fun can tumble up to their rooms leaving the bride and groom clear and free of worry.

Morningside Inn Teaming with wildlife such as Heron, Deer, and Red Fox, the visuals of this open, out-doors setting guarantees a one of a kind wedding atmosphere. In Fredrick, MD with three hundred acres the Inn dates back to the 1900′s where it functioned as a bank barn. Newly restored the structure still has its original dark, heavy structural beams which serve as accent to the clean Amish lines of the house. Once rented, every bit of acreage is yours to do with as you please and the choice of ceremony is limitless. The dining room allows for two levels of fun, a more casual mix on the lower level and elegance on the upper level. They also house their own on site flower shop and Event’s planning that includes, photography, videography, and musical entertainment.

Our home is not limited to rooms inside the house. The front lawn, the garden, the backyard are also parts of the home. At night, these areas of the home are made to look more beautiful with good lighting. Besides the ordinary lamp, another great option to choose to do the job of illuminating the yard is by using outdoor post lanterns. Unlike pendant lights, you can place these lights anywhere you like in your yard because it has a pole to hold the lanterns.

Outdoor post lanterns are stable and firm since their poles are secured to the ground. The wiring is usually buried underneath the ground and therefore keeps the visual neat for your visitors. Most lanterns and poles are made of iron, aluminum and other metals for durability and resistance to rusting. The enclosed designs of the lanterns also provide cover for the light bulbs so they will not get wet when it rains.

Outdoor Lighting

You have probably seen these post lanterns illuminate the streets and alleys in your place. They can also be seen in some parks and amusement centers. Some businesses also choose to use outdoor post lanterns to light their place. They are commonly used outdoors because they do not need roofs or ceilings since their power source and attachment is from the ground. However, these lights can also be used in our homes as outdoor lights.

Besides the safety and security it provides, the aesthetic value is also one of the reasons why these lights are good additions to the yard. The designs vary from old-fashioned, modern to rustic. There are many styles to choose from that can complement the design of your house or the area in your yard you want illuminated. You can place them at the gate or along the pathway to your doorstep. They can also enhance the look of your garden.

You can still enjoy and appreciate the flowers at night. If you had your front yard landscaped, outdoor post lanterns can also provide the perfect lighting to keep them visible for you and the others to admire. These lights can also be placed near the pool to give light when you have a pool party or simply want to go for a swim. The possibilities of enhancing the outdoors of your house by these lights are only limited by the imagination and creativity.

Such outdoor lanterns are pretty easy to set up and wire. Some even comes pre-wired at your convenience. However, if you want different combinations of pole and lanterns, you may have to do the wiring yourself. You will also need to do some digging to keep the wires buried underground. If it all looks a bit overwhelming for you, it is recommended to hire the help of a professional electrician to be sure that the wirings are safe.

For those who want to go beyond ordinary lights, outdoor post lanterns are another great choice to enhance the look of your house at affordable prices. With just a few easy steps, your lights will stand out from the rest.

Outdoor Post Lanterns – A Lighting That Stands Out

You may want to add beauty into your outdoors by adding outdoor post lanterns. It not only provides security and safety from the outside but shows the real beauty of your home.

Many people have seen ads on doing Medical Billing from home, or making lots of money at Medical Billing but they don’t really know anything about it. They don’t have any billing background and they wonder if they will be able to do it.

There are lots of ads out there that make it seem easy and that no background is needed. They say you can make big bucks in a short amount of time. They make it sound like the medical providers are just sitting out there waiting for someone like you to come along and save them from their billing.

Home Based Business

Well, the truth is you can make money at Medical Billing, you can do it from home if you like, but it’s a little more involved than the ad indicates. It can be done without a background in Medical Billing, but a little bit of experience is always helpful. If you don’t have a background in Medical Billing, then you should do a little research to make sure you understand the field and exactly what you will be doing.

This is a good business opportunity. It is getting harder and harder for medical providers to keep their billing in house. There are many changes in how billing is done and many requirements that insurance carriers have that make it hard for the provider. It makes sense for them to have an ‘expert’ to handle the billing for them so they don’t have to deal with the changes and requirements.

Many insurance carriers require that providers file their claims electronically. This requires updated equipment and someone that can handle the issues that go along with electronic billing. Many providers choose to outsource for this reason alone.

If you are considering starting a Medical Billing Business I would recommend you do a little research before you get started. Make sure you understand what Medical Billing is, and exactly what you will be doing. Familiarize yourself with as much information as you can and make sure you have a clear plan to get started.

Used lockers are metal storage containers that can be used to store gym clothes, sporting equipment, office wear, all kinds of personal items, or, in the case of heavy-duty, high-security lockers, personal valuables and/or company documents (but in the latter case, a safe might be a better bet). Used lockers are reasonably priced and are not just for schools and students. They are great to use around the home or summer camp. Used lockers come in all shapes and sized and are made using different materials including the traditional metal lockers. You will find many used metal lockers for sale online at locker company sites and other sites like http://www.ebay.com.

Lockers are found in schools, work, gyms, etc. Often times schools and gyms replace lockers every few years. Many locker companies will refurbish these lockers and put them up for sale. The prices are far cheaper than buying new lockers, and you can hardly tell the difference. Used lockers are great for the home because you can store almost anything in them from household cleaning products (keeping them away from the kids) to storing valuables including papers or collectibles.

Chandeliers

Depending on the design, you can keep your locker in the basement or in your bedroom. As noted, used lockers can be purchased in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs, and because they are refurbished, they look brand new. You can even find used wooden lockers that will look great in a bedroom, and will conveniently store materials that need to stay dry like important personal records.

There are primarily three ways in which information technology (popularly referred to as IT) has brought about a sea change in the way in which people conduct business in different parts of the world.

One of the most important advantages of using this technology is that time constraints are eliminated. Since updated information can be provided to company personnel and existing or potential customers at remote locations on a real time basis; more business can be done. Organizations can save a lot of money because they do not have to pay for their employees to travel to meet either customers or other executives. People also do not have to spend hours waiting in airports or recovering from jet lag.

Home Based Business

Meetings held through the Internet are as good as the traditional ones. In fact, in some cases, companies also involve their customers in the meetings so that the products can be designed according to their needs.

Since information from all parts of the globe can be compiled and merged with the inventory management system of the organization, the process of accepting orders and supplying the materials has become far more seamless. If the time taken between invoicing and shipment is reduced, customers are bound to be satisfied.

As more and more people start using the Internet for business and personal reasons, companies that do not adapt themselves and use the upcoming technologies are bound to fall behind. Today customers expect goods and services to be available round the clock, seven days a week. E-commerce is a mode of business where the product is sold through the website of the company. This means that people do not have to step out of their homes to make purchases.

Irrespective of whether you are a business-to-business or business-to-consumer concern, you should make use of information technology to maximize profits.

How Information Technology Has Changed the Way Business is Conducted

i-Tech Zone is an online IT resource where you can find all kinds of software related information including development, mobile apps, free softwares, downloads, software reviews, software outsourcing and more.

Learn how to start a soap making business and you can make a serious part-time income. Problem is though that lots of other people have the same idea. Trick is most of those people aren’t thinking about marketing. They just want to make soap and hope somebody buys it. Here’s the deal.

Before you sell it, make it beautiful. Take the time to learn how to make really beautiful soap. It isn’t hard to do, but it takes some practice. Get the right information and practice. You’ll need the basic tools, but any hobby soap maker has the basics. Well, maybe there’s one exception.

Home Based Business

That’s molds. Get some professional molds so you get a pro look to your soap. The right molds are easy to use and cheap too. That’s what you want… easy and cheap.

Put time into developing unique soap. Why buy from you instead of the other thousands of soap makers? You can make your product special in many ways. You can offer wild colors. You can use only essential oils for scents. You can use organic ingredients. Make milk soap. Whatever it takes, set your soap apart.

Then how can you sell it. There are many ways. One of the easiest is to get in front of a lot of people who buy soap. Do that and you’ll sell soap. The fastest way to do that is to get in a craft show or festival. That’s probably the fastest way to get started.

Here’s the trick. You can build a real business if you follow up with your customers. What’s that mean? Simple. Keep a customer list. Mail a little catalog to some of your customers. If you have a good product, some of them will order. Based on our experience, a huge percentage may order, 10 to 20 percent. Think about that. You get orders without even leaving home. That’s a worthy goal to shoot for.

Learn how to start a soap making business and you can build a solid part-time income. The trick is learning how to set your products apart from the sea of other people trying to sell soap. It can be done, but not by following what most other people do.

How to Start a Soap Making Business With Nearly Nothing

We learned more from watching the retail experts than we did from watching and listening to soap makers. That helped us sell over 500 bars of soap in a weekend several times.

Whether you like it or not, you are a representative of the United States once you travel to a foreign country. Many have to come to associate such questions as: “Don’t you have an American cup of coffee?” or “You don’t speak English?” or “That’s not how we do things at home.” as typical American behavior overseas.

Nonetheless, there are several things you just can’t do when you travel as they are regarded in bad taste: taking photographs of people without asking their permission, acting critical or amused by customs that are alien to you, getting too familiar, too fast (for example, slapping someone on the back, even if the gesture is well intentioned).

Bathroom

To be regarded as a good ambassador (and save yourself from embarrassment), it’s advisable to read a few books or research online about the culture and customs of the country you plan to visit.

Clothing: Wearing shorts in public is generally not acceptable in most parts of the world, including some European countries. In Arab countries, low necklines, sleeveless shirts, and short skirts are definitely a bad idea. When in doubt, dress conservatively. Also, while it is tempting to dress in the local style, like wearing a sari in India, be sensitive to the culture – sometimes the local citizenry will appreciate your attempt to fit in; sometimes it will be considered an insult.

Greetings/touching: Handshakes are an almost universally accepted form of greeting, although in some countries, like Japan, a traditional bow from the waist down is preferred. Be careful how you address someone; don’t use first names unless you are invited to do so. In some countries, you’ll see a lot of hugging and kissing going on among the locals (Greece, Italy, Latin countries, Slavic countries); an affectionate hug or peck on the cheek that you share with a new acquaintance is fine, but usually if you are responding to, not initiating it.

Language/Gestures: Taking a crash course in the language of the country you will be visiting rarely results in the mastery of the language. Instead, learn some polite expressions (hello-goodbye-thank you) and relax. English is pretty common worldwide, especially in tourist areas, and you can always include body language to get your message across. However, some American gestures have totally different meanings in other countries. For example, in Bulgaria, shaking your head horizontally means “yes”; shaking it vertically means “no”. Also using the American gesture for “OK” (the thumb and forefinger making a circle with the other fingers pointing up) can be embarrassing. In Brazil that gesture means “screw you”: in Japan it means “money”: in Southern France it means “zero” or “worthless”.

Food/Drink: You may find yourself staring down at a local delicacy – snake soup in China, a yak burger in Tibet, sheep’s eyes in Saudi Arabia, calves’ brains in France – and wonder what to do, particularly if you are a guest in someone’s home. Be brave, take small bites, and pretend it tastes like something you like. When presented with a strong alcoholic drink, like ouzo in Greece, take small sips and stop when you must (you can refuse, citing medical reasons as your excuse). Remember that Hindus and some Buddhists don’t eat beef (the cow is sacred); Muslims don’t eat pork, and strict Muslims abstain from alcohol. If you are eating with Muslims, never touch food with your left hand (the left hand is for bathroom use and is considered unsanitary; using it would be very offensive).

Socializing/conversations: If you are acquainted with the history and culture of the country, you shouldn’t get unnerved. In general, some topics can be touchy or controversial, like money, religion, politics, and sex. But the particular nature of the people is critical. The Japanese do not want to talk about World War II; the French scowl at the classic American question: “What do you do for a living?”; the Chinese call their country “China” or the “People’s Republic of China” – not “the Mainland”; people in Scotland are “Scots” or “Scotsmen,” not “Scotch” (the drink) or “Scottish” (the language or the terrier).
