Gardening plants like any other commodity costs money to buy and at today’s prices it can cost you a small fortune just to plant up even the smallest of gardens. Prices for garden plants seems to have risen sharply in the last couple of years. Even wholesale prices have rocketed.

And in the current economic climate money is tight and cut backs have had to be made just to keep your head above water and pay your normal living bills. So a lot of spending on your “luxury” items has been cut back severely or has stopped altogether.

Gardening

Now a lot of you may see gardening as a “luxury” and have cut back your spending on a lot of your gardening activities. But where gardening plants are concerned you don’t need to. You can make real savings by propagating your own plants. In fact in most cases you can get gardening plants for free simply by sowing seeds or taking cuttings. Or by dividing which is a real simple way to get plants for free.

Dividing clump forming plants, like Hosta, Aster, Ornamental grasses or Saxifraga is so easy. Just carefully dig up the plant, divide into as many pieces as you can, just making sure there are good roots and a growing tip on each piece, and then plant them all up. Now how easy is that?!

Its so easy in fact that even if you have no gardening experience at all you should be able to do this and be real successful. Another real easy way to get free plants is “earthing up”. now this is real simple. All you have to do is rake soil over the top of your gardening plants and it will produce loads of new plants.

Ok you can’t do this with all gardening plants and there is a little bit of easy preparation work you need to do first, but those gardening plants you can earth up are real easy and you are sure to succeed. Gardening plants you can earth up, Azalea, Berberis, Daphne, Rhododendron (dwarf varieties), Rosemary, Veronica, Violas, these are just a few, there are many others you can earth up.

Another real easy way to get free plants is to take cuttings. From one Fuchsia you can take up to about fifty cuttings, root them, grow them on and still have the original Fuchsia plant that will grow normally and produce loads of flowers. So from just one Fuchsia plant you can get up to another fifty new plants. Do this every year and you could end up with hundreds, even thousands.

And each cutting will be just like the plant it came from. But its not just Fuchsias, you can do the same with Hebe’s, Geraniums and many others. Taking cuttings is not really difficult, with a little practice you can quickly become an expert and produce many new plants from loads of your own gardening plants.

Another way to get hundreds, even thousands, of new plants is to collect seeds from your plants after they have finished flowering. Most plants produce seeds after they have finished flowering and they are easy to collect. Just collect the seeds when thy have ripened and you can either sow them straight away or store them for later. Some seeds will keep for years and will still germinate when you sow them.

Sowing seeds is not difficult and with a bit of practice you will soon become an expert. You should be able to propagate enough gardening plants to fill all your flowering beds and borders, patio tubs and pots, window boxes, troughs and hanging baskets. You could even have enough new free plants from sowing seeds, taking cuttings, dividing or earthing up to give loads away to your family and friends.

Or you could sell them. Now there’s a thought, free gardening plants and make money.
