When it comes to writing, there are many challenges we face. What if you are a stay at home or work at home parent with children home all day? How can you continue to write without the distractions of children and parenting responsibilities? As a full time writer and mother of four, let me assure you it can be done. It just takes some time and effort on the part of everyone.

Here are some tips to help you write with children at home:

  • Create a quiet place to do your writing. If you don't have a home office, designate a specific place in the house for your “office” space.
  • Plan a schedule. Be sure to include your writing time as well as time you spend with your child(ren). When you have it planned on a schedule, everyone knows when you will playing or hanging out with the kids and when they should leave you alone for your writing time.
  • Talk to your children about your writing, why you do it, why it's important and why you need their help in allowing you to do it. Children of all ages can understand this.
  • Be flexible. When you work at home with children you have to accept that things will not always go as planned or according to schedule. Allow yourself to be flexible enough to “go with the flow”.

With these tips, you can work at home with your children and still be able to get the writing that you need completed. There may be some bumps in the road from time to time but as everyone in the family adjusts to the writing schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get your writing complete. Happy writing!
