If you are suffering from morning sickness, you may be worried that this condition could affect your unborn child. However, morning sickness could only become a problem if you cannot keep any foods or fluids down and begin to lose too much weight.

Here are some ideas to bring you relief:

• Avoid warm or hot places as heat can increase the nausea.

• Open windows or turn on an extractor fan when cooking and after meals.

• Using a microwave oven for cooking usually produces fewer odors.

• Carry a handkerchief on which has been sprinkled a few drops of essential oil so that you can breathe through it if you cannot get away from a smell that affects you. This is a very old but good remedy.

• Try eating something salty before a meal as this can be helpful.

• Try to avoid foods and smells that trigger your nausea and stick to those items that do appeal even if this provides a rather bland and even unbalanced diet. You may find food served cold or at room temperature easier to eat.

• Keep simple snacks next to your bed so that whenever you wake up you can eat a small amount, rest about 20 minutes before getting up and then get out of bed slowly. Crackers or dry cereals are good snacks to try.

• Eat small, frequent meals and snacks throughout the day (every 2 hours) so that your stomach is never empty.

• Do not skip meals.

• Avoid spicy and fried food.

• Eat more carbohydrates such as a plain baked potato, white rice or dry toast.

• Other suggested foods are gelatin desserts, chicken broths, sugared decaffeinated or herbal teas, and pretzels.

• Try drinking fluids between meals in small amounts but frequently – some 1.5 to 2 liters per day.

• Try to rest and relax as much as possible and avoid any stress. Take naps during the day.

• Make sure you get a good night’s sleep.

• Ginger ale made with real ginger (alternatively grate some fresh ginger into hot water to make ginger tea) as this is thought to settle the stomach. A peppermint tea is also recommended.

• Do not skip meals.

• Take any vitamin supplements later in the day rather than in the morning. Some women find the iron in prenatal vitamin supplements causes nausea. If you think your morning sickness is related to such supplements, then check with your doctor

You may find it difficult to believe but nausea is actually good for you as in pregnancy, nausea protects you from eating the wrong foods. So stay away from whatever it is that makes you feel nauseas, it as it is your body’s way of telling you shouldn’t have it.
