Model train collecting is a very popular hobby, with more and more people collecting model trains than ever before. People often consider model railroading and the collecting of model trains to be a very expensive hobby that only professional railroaders can participate in, this is certainly not true. Almost anyone can start a basic model railroad with some simple railroad scenery such as trees, grass and buildings and if you shop around you can buy model trains for some really good prices.

Model railroading is a creative hobby so it is good if you enjoy making things and have a good eye for design - that will make things so much easier for you. But as most parts of your model train collection can be bought from a modelling store this isn’t essential. A whole range of people collect model trains, the hobby ranges from children being bought a model train for Christmas right up to professional modellers spending thousands of dollars on specialist model trains.

In fact, model train collecting is so popular that special societies have started to be opened. This allows everyone who enjoys model railroading to talk with other people who have similar interests as they do. Unknown to most people is the fact that the first model train society was set up in 1920 and still continues today.

The model train that you decide to buy varies on your experience and how much money you have to spend, you can buy a simple oval model train set for $20 or you can spend much more and buy a professional set which includes a scale model train, complex track and even the realistic scenery. However a lot of people who collect these model trains buy a simple train and track and develop the scenery themselves so they can create something unique and exactly to their specifications. You would be surprised at how many people spend hundreds of hours creating exact replicas of towns and cities.
